The end of regional sports networks is no longer some distant possibility. It is here, and it is hitting home for Cavaliers fans.
As George Thomas of the Akron Beacon Journal writes, the conclusion of the Cavs’ regular season also marked the end of FanDuel Sports Network, “a vestige of a dying sports broadcasting era.”
That line pretty much sets the tone. This is bigger than one network going away. It is about the entire model changing in real time.
Thomas notes that regional sports networks have been fading for years as tech companies continue to push deeper into media rights. What once felt simple, turn on the TV and watch your team, has turned into something else entirely. In his words, following games today can feel “akin to solving a Rubik’s Cube with games spread across multiple platforms.”
There is frustration on both sides. Some fans hope fewer cable deals might lower costs, though history suggests otherwise. Others just miss the simplicity.

The bigger picture is what stands out. Thomas points to the rise of streaming and the fragmentation of audiences. Games and shows are no longer centralized. They are scattered across services like Netflix, Amazon and others, often requiring multiple subscriptions just to keep up.
The pandemic only sped things up. Streaming platforms saw massive growth, and that momentum has not slowed. At the same time, traditional television has struggled to maintain the kind of broad, shared audience it once commanded.
Still, there is one constant: Live sports remain king.
As Thomas makes clear, the demand for games is not going anywhere. If anything, it is increasing. That is why tech companies continue to invest heavily in sports rights.
So where does that leave Cavs fans? In the short term, in transition. In the long term, likely paying for access in a new way.
“Those local game rights will find a home,” Thomas writes. “They are far too valuable.”
The catch is simple. It probably will not look like it used to.
