Could Kevin Love be headed back to the Cavaliers? Apparently, it’s at least something to watch.
The Cavs are searching for another big man to provide depth behind Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen, and ESPN’s Brian Windhorst mentioned Love as a potential option on The Hoop Collective podcast.
“The Cavs are looking for a big man and Kevin Love is out there,” Windhorst said. “That’s a guy to keep an eye on for Cleveland.”
Love, who turns 38 in September, spent nine seasons with the Cavaliers and was a key member of four straight NBA Finals teams, including the 2016 championship squad.
He averaged 6.7 points and 5.8 rebounds in 37 games with Utah last season, shooting 37.3 percent from beyond the arc.
Cleveland isn’t looking for a starting center, of course. Mobley and Allen have that covered. But another veteran big would provide some insurance behind them, even after the Cavs re-signed Thomas Bryant earlier this summer. Nae’Qwan Tomlin could also take another step this season.
Love also would bring shooting, rebounding and plenty of familiarity with the organization. There are other possibilities for him.
Love’s agent, Jeff Schwartz, had contact with Philadelphia earlier this summer after LeBron James signed with the 76ers, though nothing has materialized there. Love also has a strong relationship with Jazz coach Will Hardy, and Utah has interest in bringing him back.
So there’s nothing to suggest a Cleveland reunion is imminent. But the Cavs need another big man. Love needs a home.
So given their history together, it’s certainly one worth keeping an eye on.
