NBA legend Derrick Rose cried when doctors told him he tore his ACL in 2012.
Rose tore his left ACL in Game 1 of the 2012 playoffs between the Chicago Bulls and Philadelphia 76ers.
The Bulls drafted Rose with the first overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. Rose, a Chicago native, averaged 16.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.2 blocks as a rookie. He won the Rookie of the Year Award.
In Year 2, Rose made the All-Star team. He averaged 20.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 6.0 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.3 blocks.
In Year 3, Rose made NBA history. He won the MVP Award at 22, becoming the youngest MVP of all time. Rose averaged 25.0 points, 4.1 rebounds, 7.7 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.6 blocks. He led the Bulls to the best record in the NBA.
In Year 4, which was the NBA’s lockout year, Rose averaged 21.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, 7.9 assists, 0.9 steals and 0.7 blocks. He tore his left ACL on April 28, 2012.
Rose missed the entire 2012-13 season. While he returned for the 2013-14 season, Rose only played in 10 games. He tore his right meniscus against the Portland Trail Blazers and underwent season-ending surgery.
In 2014-15, Rose played in 51 games. He averaged 17.7 points, 3.2 rebounds, 4.9 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.3 blocks. The Memphis product tore his right meniscus again, but the surgery Rose had allowed him to come back.
The 2015-16 season was Rose’s final campaign with his hometown Bulls. He averaged 16.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.2 blocks in 66 games. Chicago missed the playoffs and traded Rose to the New York Knicks in the summer.
In 2016-17, Rose appeared in 64 games with the Knicks before tearing his meniscus in his left knee and undergoing another surgery. The former MVP averaged 18.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.3 blocks.
In the summer of 2017, Rose signed a minimum deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers to play with LeBron James. Basketball fans were excited to watch LeBron and Rose play together.
Unfortunately, Rose suffered a serious ankle injury in the second game of the season versus the Milwaukee Bucks. He left the Cavaliers to assess his NBA future, and while he did return to the team, Cleveland traded Rose to the Utah Jazz at the 2018 trade deadline.
Rose was out of the NBA for a few months before Tom Thibodeau and the Minnesota Timberwolves signed him for the rest of the season. Rose played well in the 2018 playoffs, averaging 14.2 points while shooting 70.0% from 3 against the Houston Rockets.
The Timberwolves re-signed Rose in the summer of 2018. Rose rejuvenated his NBA career in 2018-19, averaging 18.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 0.6 steals and 0.2 blocks.
On Halloween in 2018, Rose scored a career-high 50 points against the Jazz, the team that waived him. It was an emotional evening for Rose, who cried since he had been through a lot injuries-wise.
In the summer of 2019, Rose signed with the Detroit Pistons. The guard averaged 18.1 points, 2.4 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.3 blocks before the NBA suspended the season due to COVID-19.
Rose played for the Pistons and Knicks in 2020-21. New York acquired Rose in a trade and the deal was a good one, as Rose helped the Knicks make the playoffs.
Although New York lost to the Atlanta Hawks in the first round, Rose once again proved he still had juice, averaging 19.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 0.4 steals and 0.2 blocks.
In 2021-22, Rose played in just 26 games with the Knicks due to an ankle injury that required surgery. In 2022-23, Rose appeared in only 27 games due to depth-chart reasons.
A three-time All-Star, Rose played for the Memphis Grizzlies last season. He appeared in 24 games and averaged 8.0 points.
Rose retired from the NBA before the 2024-25 season began. He finished his career with averages of 17.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, 5.2 assists, 0.7 steals and 0.3 blocks.
