Donovan Mitchell may not have intended to send a message, but Cavaliers fans certainly noticed anyway. Such is life in today’s NBA.
As first highlighted by Cavs on SI’s Chase Brownawell, Mitchell shared a series of photos and videos from the 2025-26 season on Instagram, along with a brief caption: “Back soon.”
The post quickly generated discussion among Cavs fans, many of whom viewed it as an encouraging sign following Cleveland’s disappointing finish in the Eastern Conference finals.

Some, of course, viewed it as less-than-encouraging. Hey, you can’t please everybody.
Mitchell’s post featured several images from this past season, including shots of himself alongside teammates James Harden, Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen and Max Strus.
Whether the message was simply a reflection on the season or something more remains open to interpretation. But it arrives at a time when the Cavs continue to be the subject of offseason speculation.

Questions surrounding the roster have persisted since the team’s playoff exit, with rival executives and league observers debating whether the Cavs will largely keep their core intact or explore changes around the margins.
Mitchell, meanwhile, has repeatedly expressed his commitment to the organization. Throughout the season, he spoke positively about the Cavs, the front office and the team’s championship aspirations.
The All-Star guard is also eligible for a contract extension this offseason, adding another layer of intrigue to what could be a significant summer for the franchise.

“Back soon,” is all that Mitchell wrote.
But yeah, that was more than enough to get people talking.
