Knicks-Raptors Notes: Immanuel Quickley, Trade Exceptions, Draft Pick

Guard Immanuel Quickley was a key piece for the Raptors in the OG Anunoby trade with the Knicks, and keeping Quickley in Toronto is likely to come at a cost, per Michael Grange of SportsNet.Immanuel Quickley

Quickley and the Knicks recently talked contract extension, but those discussions were paused after Quickley sought a deal comparable to the one Spurs guard Devin Vassell received (five years, $135 million), Grange noted.

That said, the Raptors highly likely intend to re-sign Quickley as a restricted free agent in July.

  • The Knicks were indeed concerned with reaching agreement on an extension with Quickley, given the type of deal he was reportedly seeking, per Ian Begley of SNY.tv.
  • Much like the Raptors, the Knicks may not be done dealing before the Feb. 8 trade deadline, Begley noted. As we relayed here, Toronto is expected to explore trades centered on big man Pascal Siakam.
  • New York will be $5.1 million below the luxury-tax line and $9.9 million under their hard cap, per Bobby Marks of ESPN. Meanwhile, Toronto will be $1.95 million below the tax and $4.85 million under the hard cap.
  • Along with that, the Knicks are creating a trade exception worth Quickley’s salary ($4.1 million) and the Raptors will generate an exception one worth Precious Achiuwa’s salary ($4.3 million), per Yossi Gozlan of HoopsHype.
  • Finally, the Raptors failed to land a first-round pick in the deal — but they will still walk away with some pretty good draft capital. As Marks wrote, the pick they are receiving from the Knicks comes via the Pistons. That means it should be the first selection of the second round (No. 31 overall), given Detroit’s struggles.
