The NBA lottery might finally come out of the shadows.
As part of the league’s proposed “3-2-1” reform plan, there’s growing momentum to televise the actual lottery drawing, not just the envelope reveal afterward.
That would be a significant change.
Right now, the drawing happens behind closed doors, with a small group of media and league officials in the room. Fans only see the results once the order is already set.
That could soon change.
According to Sam Amick and Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic, league sources say televising the drawing itself is being discussed as part of the broader overhaul.
It makes sense. Transparency has long been a talking point around the lottery, especially with conspiracy theories popping up almost every year.
Showing the actual ping-pong balls in real time would eliminate a lot of that noise. Or at least most of it.
It would also turn the lottery into more of an event. More drama. More reaction. More reason to tune in beyond just seeing who lands the No. 1 pick.
Nothing is finalized yet. But if the broader lottery reform passes as expected, don’t be surprised if the NBA takes this step too.
The suspense might finally be live.
