NBA Notes: All-Star Changes, TV Ratings, In-Season Tourney

All-Star Game

The NBA is contemplating changing the All-Star Game back to the East vs. West format it utilized for most of the league’s history, per Sham Charania and Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic.

The league has used a player draft the past few seasons, to limited success in terms of viewership. Now, the NBA is hoping o restore some semblance of competitiveness to its version of the midseason classic.

Should the NBA ultimately decide on going back to East vs. West, it could come into play as soon as next season.

TV Ratings

The Nuggets’ Game 2 win over the Lakers drew a rating of 4.1 rating and averaged 7.6 million viewers, per Jon Lewis of Sports Media Watch.

That marks the highest rating for a conference finals game since 2019. Along with that, Game 2 of Nuggets-Lakers peaked at 9.45 million viewers.

In-Season Tournament

While team owners and fans have been highly skeptical, the NBA is instituting an in-season tournament next season and it seems to be for one reason — it could mean lots of money.

Per Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, the NBA is projecting the in-season tourney to rake in about a billion bucks.

“This is a little scoop, apparently Adam Silver said at the GM meeting, which I believe was Tuesday or Wednesday here in Chicago, that the league is projecting the In-Season Tournament will generate an extra $1 billion for the league,”  Fischer said on the No Cap Room podcast, via RealGM. “One billion dollars. I don’t know where that calculation is coming from, but if that’s the case, clearly they’re excited about it for that reason alone. Obviously there’s certainly a goal it will induce some more intrigue in the games before the postseason.”
