Kevin Garnett doesn’t mince words. Especially when he sees something he likes.
The Hall of Famer was glowing when discussing James Harden and his early impact in Cleveland, suggesting the ripple effects could be massive for the Cavaliers’ frontcourt.
“He’s gonna help them,” Garnett said on the KG Certified podcast. “You know why? Zubac was a lob threat. Capela, he made him a lob threat, got him a big contract. If Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen can tap into what he was doing with Zubac, it’s over.
“He can reinvent Mobley right now, bro. He can get Mobley and Allen six to eight points a game just off the lob threat.”
That vision is already starting to show.
The Cavs are 2-0 since adding Harden, knocking off Sacramento and Denver while scoring 132 and 119 points, respectively. Harden has averaged 22.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 7.5 assists in those two games, shooting 48.3 percent overall, 46.7 percent from three, and 100 percent at the line.
Just as important, the fit with Donovan Mitchell has been seamless. Two ball-dominant guards. Zero awkwardness so far.
Mitchell has poured in 33.5 points and 7.0 assists per game alongside Harden, shooting better than 51 percent from the field. The offense hasn’t stalled. It’s flowed. And lately, it’s been deadly.
For Harden, the stakes are obvious. He’s still chasing his first championship after coming up short in the Finals with the Thunder against the Heat back in 2012. For Mobley and Jarrett Allen, the second round has been the ceiling.
That’s why this feels different.
Harden is under contract through next season, with partial guarantees, after the Clippers balked at a longer-term commitment. Cleveland is widely expected to revisit his deal this summer.
If Garnett’s right, the Cavs didn’t just add a star. They may have unlocked two more.
