Cavs Bring In Alabama Draft Prospect Cliff Omoruyi For Workout

With the season reaching an unceremonious end, the Cavaliers are focused on the next chapter. And for now, that starts with next month’s NBA Draft, as little difference as that is expected to make for them.Clifford Omoruyi , Cavaliers, NBA

Nevertheless, the Cavs brought in Alabama center Cliff Omoruyi for an individual workout on Tuesday, according to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com. A Hoops Wire source confirmed the workout.

Omoruyi, 23, is 6-foot-11 and spent his first three college seasons at Rutgers. He is projected by many to be a late-second-round selection. So it could work out well for the Cavs, who own the Nos. 49 and 58 picks in the draft (both second-rounders).

Omoruyi’s best college season came in 2022-23, when he averaged 13.2 points and 9.6 rebounds at Rutgers. He compiled averages of 7.9 points and 6.5 boards with the Crimson Tide this past season and is viewed as an athletic — albeit raw offensively — energy type who can offer muscle underneath.

“Omoruyi told NJ Advance Media that he has used his NIL money to buy his mother a house in Nigeria, the kind of gesture that would never have been possible for a college player even three years ago,” wrote Steve Politi of NJ.com.

Whether it’s via the draft, trade, or free agency, the Cavaliers are believed to be in search of a playable backup center to help relieve Jarrett Allen and perhaps power forward Evan Mobley in the frontcourt.

As we’ve explained, however, the Cavs enter the offseason with limited resources and cap flexibility to make such a move, so their best opportunity may come in the draft and trying to land a second-round steal.

Anyway, sources have told Hoops Wire that the Cavs are content with where they’re selecting and aren’t looking to move up at the moment. For more, check out our most recent mock draft.
