Cavs at Pistons, Game 1: Matchup, how to watch, what to expect

So much for catching your breath.

The Cavaliers survived a seven-game grind, took care of business at home, and now… right back at it. New opponent. New city. Same stakes.

And if you believe in trends, here’s one: Teams led by Donovan Mitchell have won every Game 1 of a series they’ve played in Cleveland.

Make of that what you will. What we do know is this — Game 1 matters. Especially when neither side has had time to reset.

What to expect

This one might not be pretty.

Both teams just came out of seven-game series that felt like they lasted a month. Physically, mentally, all of it. Now they get one day to turn the page and go again.

Usually, that means one thing — execution wins. Not schemes. Not adjustments. Not some big tactical chess match.

Who takes care of the ball. Who rebounds. Who doesn’t look like they’re still stuck in Game 7.

Sound familiar? It should. That’s been the Cavs’ entire identity check this postseason.

The other part is obvious. Namely, star power.

You’ve got Donovan Mitchell on one side, Cade Cunningham on the other. Two guys who can control tempo, get where they want, and tilt a game without warning.

Game 1s like this tend to come down to which one settles in faster.

The Pistons had the better regular season. They’ve got home court. They’ve got a crowd that’s going to be all over Cleveland early.

But the Cavs have been here all postseason. Win the ugly stuff. Stay composed. Let the game come to them.

They split the regular-season series. No real edge there.

So this becomes simple. If Cleveland looks organized, takes care of the possession game, and gets a real Mitchell night? They can steal one right away.

If they’re a step slow, a little loose, still feeling the effects of Toronto? Then Detroit grabs control early and makes this a long series from the jump.

Either way, don’t expect anything easy. Not before and certainly not anymore.
