There’s a reason Cavaliers legend Mark Price still comes up whenever the conversation turns to elite shooting.
A stat making the rounds points out that as of 1989, just three players in NBA history had recorded a season shooting at least 50 percent from the field and 90 percent from the free-throw line. The names? Magic Johnson, Larry Bird … and Price.
That’s not just good company. That’s all-time company.
For Cavs fans, it’s nothing new. Price was doing things in Cleveland that, at the time, didn’t always get the national shine they deserved.
He wasn’t flashy in the traditional sense, but he was surgical. Handle, pull-up, range, touch. All of it was there, and all of it was efficient.
Before the NBA became obsessed with spacing and shooting, Price was already living there.
He helped lead some of the best teams in franchise history in the late ’80s and early ’90s, forming a core that consistently contended in the East. And while those teams ran into a certain Chicago buzzsaw, Price’s place in the game has only aged better with time.
The numbers say it. The peers say it. And honestly, anyone who watched him already knew it.
He was ahead of the curve — and very much belonged in that kind of historical conversation.
Price remains involved with the Cavs, often attends home games, and can be heard on the Mark Price For 3 podcast. Yours Truly is a regular guest and sometimes comes off the bench to fill in for Price alongside host Aaron Conrad.
