NBA Notes: Warriors, Al Horford, Thunder, trades, Celtics

Warriors

The Warriors believe Al Horford still has plenty left in the tank.

Golden State is bringing the veteran big man back on a two-year, $14 million contract after he declined his player option, a move that Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area believes is well worth the risk.

The biggest concern, of course, is age. Horford will become the first player in franchise history to appear in a game at 40 years old if he takes the floor next season.

Still, the Warriors are counting on his experience, leadership and versatility to help stabilize the frontcourt as they continue trying to contend while also searching for ways to get younger and more athletic.

Thunder

The Thunder hated to lose Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins.

According to Joe Mussatto of The Oklahoman, Oklahoma City viewed the moves as necessary to maintain long-term financial flexibility while also opening roster spots for its incoming draft class.

The decision could save the Thunder an estimated $140 million in luxury-tax penalties after Joe and Wiggins were due to earn a combined $20.35 million next season.

“Those guys have been great contributors to our team and community, and they’re a big part of what we have accomplished,” executive Sam Presti said. “I’m going to miss them personally and professionally, but I know they will do great things with their new teams.”

Celtics

Isaiah Thomas is already making an impact in his new role with the Celtics.

According to Souichi Terada of MassLive, Thomas played an active part in Boston’s draft preparations after joining the organization’s scouting staff in May.

The former Celtics guard was even given the honor of announcing Boston’s selection of Dillon Mitchell with the 40th overall pick, a small but symbolic moment as Thomas begins the next chapter of his NBA career.
